Type in Spanish

The best way to type in Spanish is to set your keyboard to Spanish. This only takes a few minutes and will make typing in Spanish easier and more intuitive. You can also get the benefits of auto-correct in Spanish. Click on the type of device you are using for instructions. Then take the practice quiz.

Mac

1. Watch this video to learn how to configure your keyboard.

2. Choose Spanish from the language bar.

3. Learn the new keyboard configuration:

All the letters and major keys (delete, enter, shift, etc.) stay the same, but some other keys change to account for the needs of Spanish. Here are the most important ones:

  • ñ = the ;/: key
  • accent = the “/’ key then a vowel (occasionally it’s the {/[ or }/] key)
  • ¡ = the +/= key
  • ¿ = shift + the +/= key
  • ? = shift + the -/_ key
  • ü = shift + the “/’ key and then U

These changes can vary slightly from keyboard to keyboard. In addition, these changes bump some punctuation/symbols to another place. The best way to figure it all out is just to push each non-letter key and then do the same thing while holding down the shift key.

iPhone or iPad

Configuration for iPhones and iPads is the same:

1. Follow this sequence: “Settings” –> “General” –> “Keyboard” –> “Keyboards” –> “Add New Keyboard…” –> “Spanish”

2. The next time you go to type on your phone, you will notice a key with a globe on it in the lower left hand corner. Tap this key and your keyboard will switch to Spanish. To use an accent, hold down a vowel and the accented vowel will appear above. Slide your finger over the accented vowel and let go. For upside down questions and exclamation marks, touch the 123 button. Hold down the question or exclamation mark and the upside down one will appear above. Slide your finger over it and let go.
