Infinitive

Overview

1. There are three kinds of verbs: -ar, -er, -ir.

2. The infinitive has two parts: the stem/root and the ending.

infinitive hablar comer vivir
stem/root habl- com- viv-
ending -ar -er -ir

3. The infinitive is an impersonal form. It often translates to English like this:

hablar = to speak
comer = to eat
vivir = to live

4. Use the infinitive to refer to a verb as a noun.

e.g. Bailar es divertido. = To dance/Dancing is fun.

e.g. No fumar = No smoking
