Comparative forms

regular

  • más/menos + noun, adjective, preposition
  • verb + más/menos

irregular

  • bueno –> mejor
  • bien –> mejor, menos mal
  • malo, mal –> peor
  • mayor, menor

Inequality

Comparative form + que

e.g. Soy más alto que Juan. = I am taller than Juan.

Comparative form + de + number

e.g. Trabajo más de 40 horas. = I work more than 40 hours.

Equality

tan + adjective/adverb/preposition + como

e.g. Eres tan alta como Sara. = You are as tall as Sara.

tanto/a/s + noun + como

e.g. Tengo tantas llaves como tú. = I have as many keys as you.

verb + tanto como

e.g. Estudio tanto como Elsa. = I study as much as Elsa.

Overview: Superlatives

1. To form a superlative, add the corresponding definite article to the comparative form.

el más alto -> the tallest
el hombre más alto -> the tallest man

2. To establish context, use the preposition de.

el hombre más alto del mundo -> the tallest man in the world

3. The comparative forms mejor and peor usually go before the noun they modify.

Sara es la mejor estudiante de la clase. -> Sara is the best student in the class.
